Faux News at the Controls

According to this Reuters report, Fox News is going to be at the controls of the cameras for this first debate. What does that mean? That means if they break the rules on reaction shots, guess who it's going to benefit...

As I consider myself a bit of an expert on this subject, why not just send to feed to all 5 networks and let them each switch their own version of the video? It's really not that hard - one set of cameras can feed many trucks.

Why Andy Rooney is Wrong

Flipping around tonight, I just witnessed 60 Minutes preimere. I thought I'd be on here discussing Bill O'Reilly's appearance, but instead - I'm amazed by Andy Rooney's diatribe against half of the population of our country.

The seething hatred dripping from Rooney's mouth may have been more appropriate for Fox News, but it ran on CBS nonetheless. According to Rooney - those who didn't vote last time are probably watching wrestling. I love how the Wingers like to accuse us of class warfare every time we suggest that the wealthy should pay their fair share, and yet a rich Conservative commentator can get away with dismissing the intelligence of the disenfranchised.

Many people didn't vote last time because they felt their voice didn't really count, and that the candidates were identical. So many people had written off the electoral process, which allowed George Bush to squeak into the Presidency. Rooney's diatribe against people who didn't vote last time was irresponsible, and very inappropriate. CBS is not going to redeem themselves for the memos fiasco by pandering to the right.

Campaign-us Interrupt-us, Explaning E-Mails Regarding the Draft, Media Coverage, Why I Don't Believe in Conspiracy Theories, Max Cleland is SOOO Cool

So once again we're on hold until after the hurricane passes, and perhaps clean-up. Whether we stop due to clean-up efforts is of course relative to the amount of damage we take. But with a little more than a week to get voter registrations and absentee ballots, time is quickly running out to accomplish maximum turnout. Of course, we'll always sit there and ask how many more people we could've registered, and how many more we could've turned out. But ultimately, these last few days really can make all the difference.

Somewhere today I was reading an article (I don't remember where) that said that during the final month of a campaign, a day can have the impact of a week, and a week a month - how the dynamic can change so rapidly. One of our volunteers in the office mentioned that this would force us all to take a break - I suppose she's right.

Many people are trading e-mails right now in regards to the possibility of restoring the draft, with people referring to specific legislation within both the House and the Senate. Below is a quote from an e-mail response I wrote on such matters.

I don't mean to diminish the alarm bells, but these particular pieces of legislation are not going to be passed. Charlie Rangel, a Democrat from New York, proposed HR 163 as a protest against the lead-up to the Iraq war - an effort to push President Bush to reconsider his belligerent actions. Congressman Rangel's actual intention was not to reinstate the draft, but rather to open a discussion over the committal of troops to questionable military actions. The last action take on HR 163 was on 2/3/2003 where it was sent over to the Department of Defense for comment. DOD has not responded, and in all likelihood they will not respond in any capacity at all. S 89 - Sen. Holling's version of the bill (submitted for the same reasons), was tabled by the Armed Services Committee in January 2003.

There are issues to be considered with the draft. Draft regulations have been changed to limit college deferments to the remainder of a semester, and to restrict the ability to claim status as a contentious objector. There are serious things to consider - you can find out more information on the current draft at http://www.sss.gov/.

Now I will say that this doesn't have anything to do with the possibility that a second term Bush administration might attempt to reinstate the draft themselves - in fact, I believe that is a very serious concern. I'm probably just being a stickler and should leave well enough alone, but I want people to have their facts straight. However, this is an issue that will play well with both young voters and boomers - Bush wants to draft your kids.

There was a study listed on Fark that discussed how all the networks are about the same when it comes to reporting on Bush, and Fox is way biased when reporting on Kerry. This disturbed me – Fox is a huge cheerleader for the Bush Administration and anything RNC (anyone who’s seen Outfoxed wouldn’t disagree on that one). According to this study – the other major networks are just as bad as Fox. Now, this is just one study – but it’s showing the continuation of an alarming trend. The term “Liberal Media” is the best marketing tool ever invented – it managed to paint a fair media as biased, thereby allowing a biased media (Fox) to paint themselves as “fair”. I know this is old news, but I feel this still needs to be discussed – only ABC has demonstrated ANY journalistic integrity recently – Oliver has the tape.

Let me ask something – has EVERYONE snapped? One of the unfortunate things about being involved in a political campaign is that you have to listen to some wackjobs and their political ideas, and smile while you do it. If I hear one more thing about White Slavery, the CIA collaborating with Israel to destroy the World Trade Center, or how health insurance and tires are nothing more than taxes paid to the shadow government – I’m going to scream. I want to put something on the record right here right now – children are not being stolen on a regular basis and sold to Eastern European slave traders, the World Trade Center was destroyed by 19 well trained and well financed Middle Eastern men – 15 of which were Saudi Nationals (not to mention also our own failure of intelligence) , and buying tires is not a tithe to the Gnomes of Zurich. I mean seriously – I consider myself Very Liberal and yet I cringe every time I meet one of these Greenies who go off on any of these subjects. I swear I’m going to deck the next person who wants to tell me what they think and proceed to let this bile spew from their mouth. Enough!

I got to meet Max Cleland on Friday – he came into our office on Mills. Very nice guy, however brief my meeting with him was (I had to make my way to Kol Nidre). I’ll have a picture up at some point. I was slightly amused by the fact that all of us who are working hard-core on the campaign still get stupid giddy whenever we meet someone like Cleland. I work with rock stars and actors all the time and it doesn’t bother me –yet I get tongue tied when I meet someone I really respect. At some point I’ll tell my John Edwards story. I also fear for the moment I meet Howard Dean.

Not Another Damn Hurricane

Alright - this is getting so routine at this point I'm thinking about adding a blog category for HURRICANES! Oi Vei! And on Yom Kippur too? Yeesh...let's not call this Hurricane Jeanne - let's call it Hurricane Yitzak!

Kerry staffers have gone out to canvass today - they're figuring everyone is in their homes, so they may as well. They're also carrying info on shelters and sandbags - the reason I'm not out with them right now is I'm wearing my suit.

Did I mention it's Yom Kippur? And don't scold me over the fact that I'm writing in my blog on Yom Kippur - for all you know, I could've written this with pen & paper and given it to a goi-friend and had them use the computer to upload the entry. Even though I didn't!

AHH!! This hurricane is going to make me either punch drunk, or stir crazy -or perhaps both. No more!!! No more!

The Draft?

I'll have more on this later, but Howard Dean wrote a column on the draft. It's worth checking out.

And no S. 89 and H.R. 163 are not going to be the bills that bring back the draft. But with our current doctrine of preemption in place, how could we staff our military without it?

Quick Updates

A few quick things...

Max Cleland will be here in Orlando tonight speaking at UCF - I'll be at Shul.

My brother-in-law over at Yankee Fog has a little piece of satire those following the campaign should see. Check it out here.

A Perfect Circle have released their cover of John Lennon's Imagine. Listen to it here.

Swift Boat Liars

An article over at CNN says the following:

Claims about Kerry's war record in previous ads have been vigorously disputed by his campaign and in media reports and are at odds with official Navy records and eyewitness accounts.

Ummm... why don't they just go ahead and say they're lying? This technique that's been employed by the media as of late of not calling out right wing kooks in an effort to look "unbiased" has resulted in them becoming a sounding board for any wingnut or freeper with an axe to grind. When someone is lying - say that they're lying. Peter Jennings did. Enough's enough! These people have been discredited - why don't we just say that?? By attempting to be unbiased, you're actually biased to the right!

The Rally

Last night the gloves came off. Kerry gave a speech where he really started hitting back at the Bush Administration for their failure of leadership. Both he and Edwards were in good form, though Kerry has lost his voice.

Intermingled throughout the crowd were notables from around the area, as well as from around the party. Richard Swann, Karen Castor were among the prominent national Dems, while Marni Berger, Doug Head, Stephen Murray, and Kim Bowles were amongst the local notables.

The whole event got off to a rough start, as Secret Service didn't bring nearly enough Mags for an event this size. The crowds got restless, especially when it started raining on them. But we made sure it was well worth the wait.

The Staff gathers for a quick picture.

Ok - now I'm going to go a little Wonkette here. Chris Kirkpatrick from N'Sync as our talent? The man looked like a washed up Lounge Singer!!...

Not to mention that N'Sync sucks. Give me Wilco.

Rally, Getting Organized, Polling

John Kerry and John Edwards will be here in Orlando on Tuesday 9-21-04 at the TD Waterhouse Center. Checkout the official site for more information. I'll be there...

We had an organizing convention this weekend at the unfortunately named Sorrosis Club. About 300 or so volunteers came out to support Kerry, and are all working within their local precincts.

Everyone at the organizing convention got pretty psyched about the upcoming visit. TD Waterhouse holds a lot of people, and it's going to be a lot of work to fill the place - but we will.

To prepare for the rally we had a sign painting party today - a bunch of volunteers came in and made signs for the rally.

There's been a lot of Discussion as of late about polling. I don't necessarily fault Gallup for weighting a Registered Republican answer more heavily than a Dem - in previous years, Republicans have been more likely to show up at the polls. This year, however, it will be different. The effects of Howard Dean's message of involvment still lingers - and there will be a large voter turnout. In fact, this year - I think we'll see the largest youth voter turnout yet.

Nader on the Ballot

As Josh Marshall and others have reported, due to illegal intervention by Florida's Secretary of State, Ralph Nader is back on the ballot. Glenda Hood seems to have already started following in Katherine Harris' footsteps meddleing in elections.

If this displeases you as much as me, feel free to give her office a call - (850) 245-6500. Press 2 once in the menu - and wait for someone to pickup. Please be courteous but firm - this is illegal, but the girl answering the phone is likely not Glenda Hood herself.

Where's the Outrage, Hispanic Office, Peaks, Freepers, Keywords

The Onion said it best with their article about the nations liberals suffering outrage fatigue. And yet I was rendered speechless this evening while watching the Daily Show. I'm rarely home anymore to watch the news - so I rely on Jon Stewart as well as the net to keep me informed - these things happen when your campaign has no Cable TV. Anyhow, Stewart gave the Douschebag of Liberty award to Robert Novak for calling on CBS to reveal their sources for the memos... yes... THAT Robert Novak. I am appalled at how shameless these neocons act, though I suppose I shouldn't be truly shocked. But still - the hypocracy on the right is astounding. Why aren't people outraged over this?

The Kerry Orlando Hispanic office opens tomorrow - complete with a computer network installed by me today.

There was some discussion around the office today by us lower on the totem pole people regarding the recent polling data showing Bush with a lead. There's been an overall sense of frustration that the wingers attacks seem to stick, and we can't stay on message. But Tony reminded me something - the wingers can only go down from here. - which is not true for us.

So the Freepers got their little victory with casting doubt on the memos. My question - how come the White House had and released a copy of these "forged" memos? If they were fakes, why did the White House have them at all?

I'm quite amused by the keywords that have brought up my site. Apparently Laura Ingram is one of them - which I think is fantastic. If any neo-con bullshit artist deserves to be called out, it's her. She's a talk show host, and yet goes on diatribes about how other media figures should just shut up and sing. Laura - just shut up. I don't even want to hear you sing.

On the Jewish Vote

Talkleft has a little article about the Jewish vote in this election cycle, and specifically Dubya's outreaches to the community.

Well Dubya - I speak for 75% of us American Jews when I say "Fuck the Republicans - we don't vote for them anyways." The wounds of James "Recount" Baker sentiments in 92 combined with your blatant pandering at the expense of real thought-out and productive policy just goes to show how little you think of us.

There's been a lot of talk about how Jews are going to vote Bush in this cycle because he supposedly supports Israel. And yet, where it's really counted Bush has not been a friend to Israel. Bush's policies have been just another pander to right wingers - and have played better with his base who believe Israel is important to their apocalypse vision. Bush has never advocated moving the US Embassy to the Israeli capital of Jerusalem, Bush refused to condemn international courts who tryed to get involved with Israel's necessary security barrier, and Bush wasn't even going to be involved with the Peace Process until after September 11th when it became politically advantageous.

John Kerry, on the other hand, has been a great friend to Israel. Kerry is for moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem (which is nothing more than a gesture, but it is a very strong one), Kerry believes to have a viable peace process we need new leadership on the Palestenian side, Kerry believes in Israel's right to respond to terrorist activities, and Kerry has always been a strong supporter of aid to Israel during his Senate career.

And let us not forget how 22,000 Jewish voters were disenfranchised in Palm Beach County - they didn't vote for Pat "Adolph" Buchanan despite the claims of the Bush administration.

EBay

Dick Cheney, in his infinite wisdom, has showed he has all the political skill of Herbert Hoover. This comment about forgetting EBay is the most MORONIC thing I've read come out of his mouth - and I've often thought of him as an intelligent man. An evil man, but an intelligent man nonetheless.

Let's break this down.
1. "Four hundred thousand people make some money trading on eBay."
Well yes - but how many of those are, as Wonkette so gracefully noted, came off of $5 sales of old Record albums (Shiny plastic discs? Never 'eard of 'em!)

2. Cheney says the inidcators miss EBay
Wrong again - those on EBay pay taxes just like anyone else, and furthermore aren't filing for unemployment. If EBayers don't count in regular figures, neither do contractors or freelancers - and that we know is quite wrong.

3. "Perhaps they made more money selling Apples"
Yeah, whatever dude. These guys really do idolize Herbert Hoover.

LAN Parties for Kerry, 61*, Hurricane Ivan

So as I continue to work on the network at Kerry HQ, I came to a shocking realization. We could have one hell of a LAN Party in there. So I hereby propose - LAN Parties for Kerry! Nothing sounds like more fun than a bunch of fellow nerds sitting around, drinking inexpensive American beer (such as Pabst), and fragging each other in some fashion. Personally - I'd like to see some RTS' such as Starcraft (the old standby) or one of the incarnations of Command and Conqueror.

So an asterisk appeared in today's Press Gaggle. This disturbs me on many levels - since when does the White House get to insert their spin into the official record? I understand that history gets written by the "victor", but does this mean we get to stick an asterisk next to the 2000 Election?

So it looks like Floirda is about to be smacked again. My buddy Adam's theory is bad weather follows him whereever he goes. My theory is that they're trying to wipe us off the map...

If it does look like it's going to hit, I'm going to Washington to visit my folks - and I'm bringing the cats this time. Enuff' Znuff!

Ruy Says Relax

I'm not quite sure where this little tidbit came from, but it's credit says Ruy Teixeira. It discusses how the recent polling is fairly flawed. I am also of the opinion that we're going to have one of the highest voter turnouts ever this year, if not the highest, and so RVs can be a trusted a little more than usual. All the same, it's time for the Kerry campaign to regain the bully pulpit.

Does Bush Really Have a 7 Point Lead?

I've certainly made no secret of my skepticism. Now consider this excellent analysis along the same lines by Professor Alan Abramowitz of Emory University, one of the leading academic analysts of American politiics. (He sent this to me in an email and graciously agreed to allow me to share it with readers of this blog.)

1. The latest Gallup Poll has Bush ahead of Kerry by 52-45 percent among likely voters but by only 49-48 percent among registered voters. Based on the numbers of registered and likely voters in their sample, this means that Gallup is projecting that 89 percent of Bush supporters will vote but only 79 percent of Kerry supporters will vote. That seems unrealistic. It is way out of line with data from the American National Election Studies on turnout among registered Dems and Republicans in recent elections. For the past three presidential elections, the turnout gap between Republicans and Democrats has averaged 3 percentage points and was never larger than 4 percentage points. The smallest gap was in 1992 (1 point), the election with the highest overall turnout. Assuming that 2004 will be another relatively high turnout election, we should probably expect a relatively small turnout gap, similar to 1992.

2. Among registered voters, Gallup shows Bush leading by one point overall, with Kerry leading 90-7 among Democrats, Bush leading 90-7 among Republicans, and Kerry leading 49-46 among independents. This means that Gallup's sample of registered voters includes more Republican identifiers than Democratic identifiers. But in 2000, according to the VNS national exit poll (which hits the overall percentages for Bush and Gore right on the nose), Democrats made up 40.3 percent of the electorate while Republicans made up only 36.5 percent of the electorate. If you apply Gallup's trial heat results among Democrats, independents, and Republicans to the VNS 2000 electorate, Kerry comes out with with a four point lead: 50.3 percent to Bush's 46.4 percent.

Food for thought, eh?

Posted by Ruy Teixeira

Ultimately, I still say that after the debates this election won't be so close. I really think it's going to break for Kerry. We'll see.

By the way - thank you to Lois for sending this to me. Lois rocks!

Shut Up and Sing... for Kerry, Hurricane Causes Boredom

There's been a lot of talk recently about what performers feel about polticians. We've seen the Dixie Chicks crucified for opposing the President. We've seen Ahnold elected Governor. We have MoveOn sponsoring a tour with the Boss. We have Foghat scream over being labelled as Republicans. As we've had Ron Silver argue policy with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. But ultimately...why do we care?

Why is it important what famous people think? Well - it's not. But, it's a beautiful thing to see musicians, specifically, standing up and encouraging their audiences to vote. One of the most eloquent voices I've heard yet is Maynard James Keenan from Tool and A Perfect Circle. During their recent show here in Orlando, he made an impassioned plea for the crowd not just to vote - but to be involved in the process.

At the Kerry office, we received a little memo that had a listing of various actors and musicians interested in making appearances for Kerry. I don't remember all of them offhand - Wilco was the one that stuck out, as previously mentioned. But all of these listed have probably been told to cram their opinion by some NeoCon at some point (Probably Laura Ingram (Sp?))

And yet this Shut Up and Sing crowd says nothing about celebrities preaching for the right. Furthermore, they say absolutely nothing about the Falwells and the Robertsons who are prosecuting a culture war against entertainers. Where's the outcry over a couple of evangelists professing their opinions about politics - after all, what makes them more qualified to speak their mind than the Dixie Chicks?

The reason I discuss this now is twofold - one was Laura Ingram. I think she's the worst of the pretty neo-con women because she's not as hysterical. Her tone is reasonable - it's what coming out of her mouth that is ridiculous. I am starting to think that Ann Coulter exists to make Laura Ingram look reasonable (I loved how Faux News titled Ann Coulter as a "Constitutional Attorney" not a "Columnist".) Laura Ingram has been the biggest voice in the "Shut Up and Sing" crowd - and I've been seeing her on television a lot more recently.

The second reason I discuss this now is much more positive. I responded to the e-mail I got about the Failure CD (listed below) saying "I'm so happy! To show my gratitude I'm going to get us a new President!". Ken e-mailed me back today - "Thanks. We need one." So Ken - I've just outed you as a Democrat. Is that ok?

So I suppose I don't mind if you Shut Up and Sing... most of you are doing it for Kerry.

Technically there's a hurricane hitting us right now. But you'd never tell if you were here - it's more like an extra windy rain storm. I'm ready for this to be over now.

Hard Drive Recovery, Hurricane Frances, Stephen Murray, Wilco for Kerry

If there is anyone who can recover a notebook harddrive for free in the Orlando area - let me know. It's not mine - a friends rather. It's a notebook harddrive, and he didn't have a recent backup. He's pretty much lost a lot of work. Any help would be appreciated - please e-mail me.

First this hurricane was worse than Charley - and was going to turn downed trees etc. into flying missles. Hide your daughters - France(s) is coming. At any rate, now it's turning into a big boring let-down. It won't even be a hurricane by the time it passes over Orlando - meanwhile all the stores, etc are closed. Rose and I had a romantic evening of it though, with Lobster and beer...and Simpsons. Warren Berger. MMMmm...Burger.

Unfortunately, if the hurricane does hit this means that we lose a week of campaiging. Not by any means do I feel that we should be campaiging while people are picking up shattered pieces of their house, but it's frustrating when you have a limited amount time to work within. Each moment in this campaign can mean the difference between victory for Kerry, so it's discouraging when you keep losing time to something that you have no control over.

So on Tuesday night at the DEC Victory Party, I was asked to work closely on the Stephen Murray for Congress campaign. To say that we're an underdog is an understatement, but if you want to help take back the house - please feel free to donate. I'll be creating a campaign blog for him shortly that will detail our daily campaiging, etc.

Inside the Kerry office we got a memo listing various musicians/artists interested in making appearances on behalf of the Kerry campaign. Much to my delight, Wilco was one of the ones listed. I am now taking it upon myself to convince the Orlando Kerry operation to let Wilco play a benefit show. Oh how I LOVE Wilco - they just plain rock.

The Convention, Grand Opening, New Hurricane

I'm going to sum up my opinion of the Republican Convention with article over at Oliver Willis' blog. Obama versus Miller? I'd take Obama any day.

We had a party last night celebrating the opening of the new office.

A very decent turn-out especially considering the weather that was about to bear down upon us.

The whole staff was present, along with many of us volunteers and some big party reps.

It's looking like we may be hit again with another hurricane. We'll see what happens.

End of the Primaries

Mazel Tov Betty - you run a good campaign. Let's hope you can keep that up through the General Election and become the first woman Senator elected from Florida. Betty had a 30 point lead over Deutsch, so I suppose her strength as a candidate should not be discounted. Let's hope she can manage such a wider margin against Mr. Martinez.

Alex Penelas gave a very classy concession speech, and his remarks showed what a good person he is. I still feel that he would've been the strongest candidate against Mel Martinez, but that's not to be. Hopefully he'll be running for Governor in two years.

Marni Berger lost her challenge to Shari McInvale by only 53 votes - that's insane. That's not losing, that's just bad luck - 26 people voting differently would've made the difference.
