When Did This Become About Who Orders the Kosher Meal?

I've made it a point to keep my opinions to myself when it comes to the Senate race here in VA - I'm voting for Jim Webb, and that's all I've felt the need to say. But I am breaking my silence, for this campaign has taken a turn for the weird.

Here's the bottom line. Peggy Fox's question was out of line - it had the flavor of "is your mother a Jewish racist?" But Allen's response made me uneasy - and it would have made me uneasy if he were a Democrat. Allen's response showed that he feels that having a Jewish background is something to hide - and an insult to him. Had this incident happened in a vacuum - I would've completely dismissed it and said let's get back to the issues. But this is the latest in a pattern of behavior. There's the Noose. And the Confederate Flag. And the photos with the Council of Conservative Citizens - a group that the Southern Poverty Law Center has labelled as a hate group (which it is). And of course, there's macaca.

Furthermore, why did Allen hide his background?

This campaign shouldn't be about race or religion. This campaign must be about the real issues that are affecting us here in this country - war, deficit, corruption - as well as more local problems like the BRAC realignment, traffic, and homeland security funding. And yet we have to listen to George Allen talking about eating a Ham sandwich (which I found rather condescending and a bit insulting within itself - though I do eat Bacon (which, for the record, is delicious)).

And then of course, there's the idiocy of Dick Wadhams. I'm very surprised how whiny and "victim-esque" he's tried to portray Allen in this campaign - I can tell you that years of Democrats screaming "That's Not Fair!" didn't really get us anywhere. And then to complain that you were the victim of the media after your guy committed a MAJOR gaffe? Dude - why were people calling you the next Rove? You're more like the next Lionel Hutz!
