How a Poodle Cut Short my TV Career

Off in the Distance

I had the pleasure of portraying an extra for a miniseries about the life of John Adams which will be appearing on HBO at some point in 2008 (Why must I wait for this AND Battlestar Galactica?!!!???). I was surprised to find them shooting in Richmond, until I realized that proximity to Williamsburg and old stuff in general made this make some sense. So on a day that the Queen was visiting the General Assembly, I was shvitzing in a warehouse in the suburbs, dressed in 18th century garb. We spent the day shooting & reshooting one particular scene, getting many angles as any good director is wont to do.

I knew it was going to be a long day, so I made arrangements with a friend of mine to walk the dog. My friend's boyfriend (who also happens to be a good friend of mine) was the one who initially commented that "Julius looks like a Muppet." This blurry photograph is conclusive proof that Julius is a Muppet. I choose the smaller Flickr size because the image is more defined.

Blurry Julius

You see? Muppet.

So I'm checking my Voicemails on the set, and I find one from my dog-walking friend telling me that she can't get the door to my apartment open. I call her, and we determine that she didn't turn it all the way to unlock the door. Well - actually she did. The lock was broken. We knew for sure it was broken when she went back and the barrel of the lock mechanism stayed with the key, rather than the door. And the door is still locked. This is good in that nobody could break in and steal my valuable Simpsons DVDs or my Hotel Keycard Collection. But this is bad because there is a doggie that probably needs to go to the bathroom hanging out, wanting company.

After a conversation with both my friend & the maintenance dude, I hauled arse back and met up with the maintenance guy to get the situation resolved. This did mean I had to curtail my acting debut, but alas sometimes these things come up.

I was amused that as I was changing out of costume, several people reminded me to have my wig taken off. Except that I wasn't wearing a wig - they just put rolls in my hair. Awesome.

I'm sorry your path to stardom has been temporarily halted!

Maybe next time you could bring Julius to the set and wear him on your head. With enough powder, he'd make an excellent wig.

You look very dapper in that costume, by the way.

I have now read the story. You're right, the dog is a muppet. Nice to meet you tonight. Good times.
